The Lucky Girl 1
(spoken in English and Arrernte)
The Lucky Girl is made up of two stories. Both stories parallel and track each other.
One story is about the devastating effects of habitual gambling. The ‘Lucky Girl’ in this story wins ‘a lot of money’ at an early age. This starts her on the slippery path of gambling… again and again. We see her life unravel – losing her job, her health and even her own daughter. All are smothered and replaced by gambling.
The other ‘Lucky Girl’ story tells about a young life without habitual gambling… school, play, sports, work, family and spirit. |

The Machine Story
(spoken in English and Arrernte)
The Machine Story talks about how poker machines really work. About the machine inside that spits out numbers, metallic and unmoved. About how ‘people think the machine is special… magic… they stroke the machine, talk to it’. About the ‘sounds, pictures and lights that make people want to play more, forgetting about saving their money.’ |
